monster
A commission to design and build a sculptural robot housing titled “Monster”. Housed within the sculpture was a projector that displayed surveillance footage of people it had been watching, casting the images onto a nearby wall. The inner shell was slush-cast in translucent resin and illuminated from within, while unfinished copper plates formed an outer layer of armour. Left untreated, the copper naturally weathered and developed a rich patina over time, allowing the sculpture to evolve as it was exhibited.
The design process began with a series of small clay maquettes exploring different forms before settling on the final angular, faceted design. I constructed the full-scale model using foam board and expanding foam, before applying a plaster render and refining the surface to achieve an smooth finish. Once the master model was complete, I created a silicone mould and slush-cast the translucent resin shell. The copper armour was fabricated with hidden fixings that bolted discreetly to the inside of the resin housing, creating the appearance of an exoskeleton skin.
The completed work developed a life of its own, touring and being exhibited in galleries across Europe.
